Keywords are no longer relevant - they don't help with search engine ranking. Major search engines -Google, Bing, Yahoo don't use them.
The important thing is your content is relevant to the subject matter. I would assume these days search engines use several methods to list and rank your site in search results including the content, menu items, tags, links and URL aliases (created from menu items), etc., (at least in terms of a Joomla site).
The meta description is relevant which provides the short description for a website you see in search engine search results.
For internal site searches (the search component), Joomla indexes the site itself, doesn't rely on meta keywords
